Frequently Asked Questions
about the Expanded Wellness Program

I've read that the Fund has some new Wellness Programs. What are they, exactly?
We have two new programs that can give you the support you need to improve your health: a 24-hour nurse helpline, and individual health coaching for members with chronic medical conditions. You can reach both by calling (866) 935-1199.

What is the 24-hour nurse helpline?
Our new 24-hour nurse helpline is a toll-free number that you can call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The experts who answer the helpline can answer any questions you might have about your medical care, such as questions about the medication that your doctor prescribed or the difference between two medications. They can discuss any recommendations that your doctor has given you, too.

What is health coaching?
Health coaching is a service primarily for members who have chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma or other similar conditions. You can call the toll-free number at any time to talk to your health coach.

Does my Health Coach replace my doctor's care?
No. The Health Coaching Service is designed to support the medical care and advice you already receive from your doctor — it's not a replacement.

I don't have a chronic condition like diabetes, but I'd like some help trying to lose weight and eat better. Can I talk to a Health Coach?
Yes. Just call (866) 935-1199 and say you'd like to speak to a Coach about any health issue you want support for. A Health Coach can give you information and support on losing weight, quitting smoking or a range of other issues.

Can I talk to the same Health Coach whenever I call?
Yes. You'll develop a one-on-one relationship with your Coach — she or he will be your personal Coach.

What if I call and my Health Coach isn't available?
You can either leave a message and arrange a time for your Coach to call you back, or you can speak to another qualified Health Coach. It's up to you.

I received a letter in the mail from a Health Coach, telling me to call him or her. Do I have to?
The Health Coaching program is completely voluntary, but we encourage you to try it. It's a valuable support program your Fund is providing at no cost to you — try talking to your health coach once and see how it goes.

I have diabetes (or high blood pressure, asthma, etc.) Do I have to participate in health coaching?
No, this service is completely voluntary. If you want more help in managing your condition, you can get it. If you don't want to participate, that's your choice, too.

I already see my doctor regularly for check-ups. What can a health coach do that my doctor can't?
It's very important that you see your doctor regularly. The health coach is simply another person that you can talk to, 24 hours a day, if you need some help in understanding your condition or managing it. Your health coach may be able to offer suggestions for managing your condition that you hadn't thought of before, or just offer encouragement when you need it.
